SUNDAY 10 DECEMBER 2017

""HOPE SHINES." Michael Stromme And His Business Supporting Orphans In Rwanda. "

Our Special Guest Is:
Michael Stromme
Social Entrepreneur. American Expat In Rwanda

Hope Shines:

Hope Shines is an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) through educational and health and hygiene programs. Michael has been affiliated with the group in Rwanda. He is now developing a business aiding orphans there.Visit http://hopeshines.org/who-we-are/

In New York, Michael was “yearning for something more meaningful in my life, and felt called to be somewhere far and exotic, like the south of India.  It was then that I met the founder of Hope Shines” who told him about the volunteer summer camp program. After that experience, ” I knew my life's trajectory had just flipped a 180.”

“Hope Shines has a new greenhouse outside Kigali where we're growing red peppers and soon butternut squash to sell at market and hotels.  I've been working on a social entrepreneurship of handmade soap which will be targeted to boutique hotels.  These both will help bring revenue streams to the organization, helping to sustain it.  The kids themselves have been learning traditional Rwandan dance, and have gotten so good that they've performed at a couple weddings.  They will continue to perform in public, and hopefully the money earned from these events will eventually pay for their school fees.”

Living In Rwanda (Kagali). Starting A Business To Support Orphans And Being An Expat.

It was a natural organic progression after he had the idea of starting a soap business in Rwanda. Michael originally intended to start the business in NY, with proceeds going to Hope Shines, and then bring it to Rwanda.” Earlier this year , “I knew I had to go to Rwanda to start the business and bring that model back to NY. I knew that ultimately I wanted to be living in Rwanda, as I'd always loved it and the people were so warm and welcoming, not to mention many friends I'd made over the years. “

Rwanda is very welcoming to visitors.  There's a big expat community, which I'm not so much involved with.  They're here for their jobs, mostly, and will hang out at the expensive restaurants and night clubs.  But people on the street in my area are always friendly, and adults and children alike will greet me with a Hello or Bonjour.

The political climate is good.  The president just got voted into an historic 3rd term because he had saved the country during the genocide, and people love him here.  He's not only kept the country safe and peaceful, but it's now known for its development and progress.  There's so much infrastructure improvements, and new buildings and hotels are going up all over.  There's also a beautiful new convention center and shopping malls.  So there are many improvements, yet still so much poverty."

About Michael Stromme:

Michael has been an actor, teacher, and massage therapist in Los Angeles, Rome, Paris, and New York.  Having been moved and inspired by a strong purpose and calling in Rwanda, he now finds himself in the world of philanthropy and social entrepreneurship, supporting a group of orphans through an organization for which he volunteers and had served on its board.  That support has led him to start a handmade soap business in Rwanda, with proceeds supporting the organization and the children

90+ Ways You Know You're Becoming French”

(with contributions by FUSAC co-owner Lisa Vanden Bos and beautiful illustrations by Hungarian artist Judit Halasz).

Our Special Guests Are:

Shari Leslie Segall

Author and Founding Director of "Foreign Affairs"

Tom McKenzie
Bassist
Jazz, Pop

SAYS SHARI:

"The French say that foreigners can never truly “become” French--no matter what legal status is inscribed upon what identity papers they carry around in

their France-based wallets. Nor might newly minted citizens or official residents wish to swap their own cultural manners and mentalities for those of the local

waiter who serves them their morning café au lait et croissant (to say nothing of totally being able to). But if you’re here long enough, your adaptation mirrors

those Escher drawings where columns of black geese or fish on the left fly or swim straight across the page, migrating and mutating by imperceptible degrees,

melting into and finally becoming their white counterparts on the right. To a greater or lesser degree, whether you expected to or not, one day you realize that

you’re crossing to the other side. How do you know that you’ve arrived?

We're going to have fun with this one!

Shari Leslie Segall will come with her very popular (already in its third printing) little book,
90+ Ways You Know You're Becoming French” (with

contributions by FUSAC co-owner Lisa Vanden Bos and beautiful illustrations by Hungarian artist Judit Halasz). Participants will call out a number. Shari will
µ
turn to that "way of becoming French" in the book and read it. Participants will then reflect upon and discuss how "French" they have (or haven't) become on

this particular point. (There have already been on-line "competitions" among readers as to how many becoming-French criteria they have met.)

Books will be available for signing and purchase (with two euros off the selling price for Paris Soirées participants).

Shari Leslie Segall, in Paris since 1985 and author of France-themed books and articles, has taught English and cross-cultural communication at the

prestigious Institut des Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po) and teaches at the French Military Academy. She is the founding director of Foreign Affairs, which

provides linguistic and cross-cultural training and creates English-language documents for executives.

JACQUELINE HARWOOD

Jacqui Harwood qualified as a physiotherapist in New Zealand in 1991 and flew to the UK to hone her skills in hospitals in London and Oxford, and private practice in Brighton.

SAYS JACQUELINE HARWOOD:

"In May 1993 life took a dramatic turn when I was hit by a speeding reckless driver and spent 3 months in hospital.

This experience totally changed my perspective giving me an empathy of how it felt to be a patient and the bonus was an extreme appreciation for life.

The long months of rehabilitation were a personal journey of healing.

I knew I had to put myself back together and designed a rehab program of swimming to cycling to yoga and then experienced the healing touch of Cranio Sacral Therapy.

I decided to further her studies and learn that therapy.

Between 1997-1998 I studied Craniosacral Therapy in London alongside osteopaths at the Craniosacral therapy Educational Trust.

My attitude has always been positive. But when you are lying in a hospital bed in a lot of pain, your family is really worried about you,  you just realize how precious life is.
CranioSacral Therapy is the deepest most profound healing you can experience I would say.

I use a really gentle touch because anything heavier sets off a reflex inhibition in your body's tissues. I have learned to "listen" with my hands. In the same way your therapist listens to what you say, I am listening to what you're not saying what you may have forgotten or what you are unable to say because of pain or shame.

I feel so incredibly lucky that my car accident stopped me in my tracks headed for a nice safe career as a physiotherapist, and instead took me on a much deeper understanding of what we can really do to heal from inside out.

It is my biggest joy helping people to recognize their body mind together for an effective treatment of stress related issues like headaches, migraines, teeth grinding, anxiety, depression, PTSD.

After spending 7 years in Australia and raising my children, building my first craniosacral therapy physiotherapy business, we moved to Paris France in 2005.  I work out of a clinic in the 14th just south of Jardin Luxembourg and Montparnasse."
